NINE JAILED FOR ROLES IN FANNY BAY HASH CASE

Prison sentences of between two and six years were handed to eight men and
one woman for their part in bringing 12 tonnes of hashish into Fanny Bay in
November 1998.

The longest sentence went to the captain of the ship which transported the
hashish most of the way through international waters, Sanford Hatley, 56.
He was the only one given a six-year prison sentence. Chemainus native Kurt
Guilbride, 49, was given a five-year sentence.

The other man to receive a five-year sentence, Wolfgang Fitznar, was
sentenced in absentia. He disappeared in the middle of the trial and
Canada-wide warrant is outstanding for his arrest.

The only woman in the case, 48-year-old Sylvie Goyer, described as "the
ring's chief communicator" was sentenced to four years in prison. Ron
Thomson, 46, from Duncan, also received a four-year sentence.

Sentences of 3 1/2 years were handed to Richard Farrington, 46, and Ronald
Grant, 57, who were part of the crew under Hatley. Sentences of 2 1/2 years
were handed Hatley's twin brother, Joel, and Ken Thomson, 49.

The trial was one of the longest in B.C. provincial court, lasting more
than three years and hearing from more than 100 witnesses.

Five other men involved in the case were sentenced in May 2000 after a
provincial court trial in Nanaimo. Four were sentenced to three years, and
the fourth, the captain of the ship which pulled into Fanny Bay with the
drug, was given a four-year sentence.

The Nanaimo trial also provided an insight into how the case was cracked
when the name of an informant was released. The man was paid $32,000 by the
RCMP as an informant between 1996 and 1998. Documents revealed the man had
made $110,000 on a previous hashish shipment, some of which he stole and
later sold.
