RCMP SEIZES DRUGS, WEAPONS AND CASH IN SWOOP ON 'BUSINESS CARD' GANG
LANGLEY - Members of a criminal gang called Dark Alley were so brazen they
gave out business cards offering 24-hour-a-day drug delivery -- until
Langley RCMP raided them last week.
Officers showed off the business cards at a media conference Wednesday,
along with tens of thousands of dollars worth of cocaine, heroin,
methamphetamines, marijuana, guns, cash and stolen property seized in
recent raids.
Police also released details of charges against six people who allegedly
ran the group.
"Our allegations are going to be that they're involved at the top, that
they're the bosses and managers," said Cpl. Dale Carr. "Our goal was not to
go after the minions." Seventeen people were arrested last week, but
charges have only been laid against the six.
Eric Brendan Montgomery, a 28-year-old Langley man, was allegedly the top
boss of Dark Alley. He faces seven charges of trafficking drugs, one of
possession for the purpose of trafficking and one of production of a
controlled substance. John Wayne Newson of Langley faces 14 charges, Melvin
Rajaratnam of Richmond faces two charges, David Nima Talaji of Richmond
faces two charges, Phillipe Powell Zopf of Port Coquitlam is on three
charges and Margit Ruta Mikelsons of Abbotsford faces two charges. Carr
said police are still looking for several suspects.
All the charges so far relate to drug possession and trafficking, but
officers are still investigating weapons charges over firearms including a
Ruger Mini 14 assault rifle, two handguns, clips and boxes of ammunition.
Crown counsel is also reviewing whether charges can be laid under new
organized crime laws that allow penalties up to life in prison for gang
kingpins and five years for members.
