PROCEEDS OF CRIME SHOULD BE USED TO PAY POLICE, COUNCILLOR TO ATTEND UBCM
SAYS
DELTA - Cities should get back some of the proceeds of crime to help
pay for policing costs, say Delta representatives who will be
attending this fall's Union of B.C. Municipalities Annual Convention.
Coun.
Scott Hamilton said crime proceeds confiscated in raids and busts end
up in provincial and federal coffers when municipalities need the cash
to cover increased policing costs.
He also said the province and federal government should change current
legislation that requires police to prove goods confiscated from
criminals engaged in illegal activities are actual proceeds of crime,
and put the onus on the suspects to prove that they aren't. The UBCM
convention will be held Sept. 20 to 24.
