CRYSTAL METH USE ON RISE

There were 38 crystal methamphetamine related "events" in Saskatoon
during the first six months of 2004, says Sgt. Jerome Engele of the
integrated drug unit.

Meth use seems to be on the rise in Saskatoon and it's a "concerning
problem," he said.

"It's a very addictive drug and the repercussions of it are just so
far-reaching. The harm it does to the body and the person and the
family is just unbelievable."

Methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, crank, ice and glass, is
a powerful nervous system stimulant that is mainly smoked. It also can
be injected or snorted.

Users may experience visual and auditory hallucinations, paranoia,
violent tendencies, nausea, vomiting, itchy skin, loss of appetite,
weight loss and acne-like lesions on the face.

The drug can be produced from household cleaners and pharmaceuticals
in makeshift labs.

There were 58 crystal meth events last year. As with the 38 so far
this year, this means the drug could have been seized, it could have
been found on the street and turned in, or a person could have been
charged, Engele said.

He said young people are attracted to the drug, which sells for $10 a
"point" -- one-tenth of a gram.

Liquor, tobacco and marijuana remain Saskatoon's top three drugs, but
crystal meth is "starting to take over from cocaine" for fourth place.
