POLICE EASILY SNIFF OUT MARIJUANA SMOKER

'Dumb Criminal' Lights Up Outside Headquarters

WINNIPEG - An accused drug offender in Winnipeg made it easy for
police to catch him when he lit up a joint just outside the doors of
police headquarters last Friday afternoon.

"I'd say this would be the dumb criminal of the week," said Const.
Shelly Glover.

The 16-year-old boy was arrested after a passerby informed officers
that a young man was smoking marijuana in the police building's
courtyard, located in front of the building near a massive historical
mural of the Winnipeg Police Service.

"We were quite surprised to (find) that someone was doing something
like that," said Const. Andrew Zurawsky.

A search of the teen turned up two marijuana cigarette butts and a
small amount of what police believe to be crystal meth.

Privacy laws prevent police from discussing the teen's reaction to his
arrest, but Const. Glover said the boy seemed surprised. "He did not
know that this was a police station."

The teen was charged with drug possession and released.

The youth's arrest wasn't the first time someone was busted for
smoking marijuana at police headquarters. Last summer, B.C. marijuana
activist Marc Emery was taken into police custody after he had taken a
drag from a giant water pipe during the Winnipeg leg of his Great
Canadian Smokeout tour.
