CANNABIS SNIFFED OUT IN JAIL MAIL
A drug detection dog at the Drumheller Institution has sniffed out cannabis
stuffed into a package sent to an inmate.
The drugs were discovered Tuesday during a routine inspection of mail sent
to inmates at the federal prison.
The street value of the 97 grams of cannabis was estimated at $850, but the
drugs would have sold for more than $2,000 inside the prison, said Staff
Sgt. Birnie Smith of the Calgary RCMP drug section.
"We're very pleased, obviously, that what we have set up for security is
working very well," said Darlene Haines, spokeswoman for the institution.
Drumheller RCMP are investigating who sent the package.
No charges had been laid at press time.
The last big drug bust at the prison occurred in March 2003, when nearly
$17,000 worth of drugs were seized.
