MOUNTIES IN B.C. BELIEVE MARIJUANA GROWERS ARE HEADING UNDERGROUND
The RCMP suspects commercial pot growers in B.C.'s west Kootenay
region have gone underground -- literally.
"There is some indication that grow activity has moved into various
mines," said Corporal Neil Cross of Salmo RCMP.
So last week about 36 specially-equipped officers swarmed an old,
abandoned mine deep in the hills outside Salmo, a small community
south of Nelson. It was part training exercise, part hunch.
Abandoned three decades ago, the Canex mine consists of 30 kilometres
of tunnels and caverns -- some large enough to drive through.
RCMP spent hours scouring the underworld and -- though they found no
evidence of a grow-op -- say that doesn't mean one wasn't there.
