DRUGS SEIZED IN SCHOOLS

LaSalle police and the OPP canine unit conducted two narcotics sweeps
at high schools in the town Tuesday.

The sweeps took place under the direction and authority of the
principals of Sandwich Secondary School and St. Thomas of Villanova
under the Safe Schools Act. OPP dogs were used to conduct hallway
sweeps of lockers and several classrooms were also searched.

At Sandwich Secondary School, a small quantity of suspected marijuana
was found in a classroom and another small amount was found in a locker.

One Sandwich student was suspended under the Safe Schools Act and was
cautioned under the Youth Criminal Justice Act for possession of a
controlled substance.

At St. Thomas of Villanova High School classroom searches resulted in
the seizure of a small amount of suspected marijuana from a student's
purse and another from a student's backpack. A homemade hashish pipe
was also seized from the backpack.

Two St. Thomas of Villanova students were cautioned under the Youth
Criminal Justice Act and are facing suspension under the Safe Schools
Act.
