ESTIMATED $2.5 MILLION WORTH OF POT SEIZED IN OPERATION BUD OUT
DELTA OPTIMIST: Delta police have arrested 22 adults, and seized 5,500
marijuana plants and about 4.5 kilograms (10 pounds) of dried bud with an
estimated street value of $2.5 million in the less than 12 weeks since the
force began another round of its Operation Bud Out program.
The idea was to get the number of marijuana-growing operations down to a
manageable level so police could concentrate on trafficking in such popular
designer drugs as crystal meth and ecstasy.
"We started in November with 28 reported grow-ops, and through mid-January,
another 15 more files came in. Of those, we executed 16 search warrants,"
Sgt. Harj Sidhu said.
In the year after Operation Bud Out was started in 2000, police executed 99
search warrants, arrested 116 people and seized 12,000 pot plants with an
estimated value of $15 million.
Police want to send a message to those involved in the illicit industry
that they will be arrested and prosecuted if they attempt to set up shop in
Delta.
