AGENTS COLLAR POT SMUGGLER

The efforts of U.S. border agents are apparently driving B.C. bud smugglers
into the drink. A kayaker tried to make a swim for it after being cornered
by agents in Boundary Bay, but soon found his escape was all wet.

Deputy Chief Joe Giuliano said the kayaker was spotted on a camera late
Monday trying to paddle across the bay from the White Rock area to
Semiahmoo Spit, west of Blaine, Wash. When the kayaker realized agents were
moving in, he decided to jump into Drayton Harbour -- "which turned out not
to be such a good idea, because . . . he was surrounded," Giuliano said.

Agents found 46 kilograms of bud worth an estimated $310,000 US inside two
hockey bags.

The pot and the kayak were seized and a 40-year-old Edmonton-area man was
arrested.
