RCMP MASSACRE: HOW IT UNFOLDED

The RCMP released some details of what occurred on the farm where four
officers were slain.

- - On March 2, the RCMP went to the farm near Rochfort Bridge to assist
with a court-ordered seizure of property, with the intent of keeping
the peace. Police discovered a marijuana grow operation.

- - Later in the day, members of Mayerthorpe and Whitecourt detachments,
along with a joint RCMP/Edmonton Police Service Green Team, executed
search warrants at the property. The occupant of the residence was not
located.

- - At approximately 4:30 a.m. Thursday, two uniformed RCMP officers
were left to secure the property until Edmonton RCMP auto-theft unit
members could conduct a search of the property for stolen goods.

- - Just prior to 9:00 a.m., two additional RCMP uniform members arrived
at the farm.

- - At 9:15 a.m., two members of the Edmonton RCMP auto theft unit
arrived at the farm and heard shots being fired inside a Quonset hut
on the property. A man came out of the building and fired a number of
shots at auto-theft members, who returned fire. The man retreated
inside the Quonset.

- - Members of Edmonton and Red Deer Emergency Response Teams were sent
to the farm.

- - At 2:18 p.m., four RCMP officers were located inside the Quonset,
dead as a result of apparent gunshot wounds. The suspect was also
found dead in the same building.
