POLICE OFFICERS DIFFER ON THE EXTENT OF PROBLEMS INVOLVING GROW OPERATIONS

(CNS) Police officials across Canada disagreed yesterday on the political
and policing issues surrounding grow-ops in the wake of the killing of four
RCMP officers on Thursday. In Ottawa, Chief Vince Bevan took aim at the
government, saying "through sentencing and legislation, we are not treating
grow-ops seriously." But Vancouver Police Department Inspector Dave Nelmes,
who investigates grow-ops, said "we haven't encountered a lot of resistance
in our enforcement of marijuana grows." Toronto's interim police chief
Michael Boyd said his focus was on the families of the murdered officers.
"This is a terrible tragedy and I really want to keep the focus on this
tragedy in Alberta."
