STUDENT'S KILLER AFTER MORE THAN CASH, POLICE SAY
A Ryerson University student discovered dead in his doorway from a gunshot
wound to the chest was the victim of thieves who failed to find what they
were after, police said yesterday.
Detective Sergeant Ken Taylor identified the dead man as 30-year-old
William Kim, painting the last moments of his life as a maelstrom of
violence triggered by a trio of assailants who barged into his Gerrard
Street East apartment demanding money.
But the three men, who arrived at around 9:30 p.m. on Friday and remained
in the apartment for three minutes, may have been looking for more than
just cash.
Det. Sgt. Taylor said police uncovered marijuana and other illegal drugs.
"We've also located a quantity of cash inside the apartment," he said.
"It's my belief that the suspects entered the apartment in an attempt to
rob the victim of either both money and/or drugs."
When the three men did not find what they were seeking, Mr. Kim was
"assassinated," he said.
Mr. Kim, who reportedly studied architecture, is the second Ryerson student
found slain this month. On March 9, Alexander Christoff, 27, was discovered
dead on a pathway in Toronto's southwest. Reports have connected Mr.
Christoff to the drug trade.
On Friday, Mr. Kim was in his apartment with his girlfriend when his
assailants burst in. He fought two of the men, Det. Sgt. Taylor said. It is
the third man, whose image Det. Sgt. Taylor said he believes was captured
by a security camera, that allegedly pulled the trigger. Police recovered
the gun, a revolver, on Gerrard just east of Yonge Street.
