Police Say Pediatrician Tried to Drive Away After Leaving Crack House

The state medical board suspended the license of a local pediatrician
Thursday, one month after he fled Dallas police during a drug-related
incident, according to the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners.

On Feb. 18, Dallas police officials said they saw Gary Lee Bryan, 41,
leaving a known crack house, according to medical board documents. When
officers attempted to stop him, he continued driving away and collided with
another car on the freeway. He then stopped, put the car in reverse and hit
the patrol vehicle, according to the medical board's report.

In his car, police found an aluminum can with holes punched in it and
burned residue along with a "white, rock-like substance" that tested
positive for cocaine, said medical board spokeswoman Jill Wiggins.

Mr. Bryan was arrested and charged with evading arrest, possession of a
controlled substance, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two
counts of aggravated assault of a public servant. He paid a $10,000 bond
and was released from jail.

Mr. Bryan, a Plano resident, could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Bryan was granted a probationary medical license in December because of
previous substance abuse issues documented by the medical board.

He was a resident with the University of Texas Southwest Medical School's
pediatrics program at Children's Medical Center in Dallas in 2002. It
wasn't clear Friday where he has been working.

Before his residency, Mr. Bryan was charged with a series of
alcohol-related and theft offenses.

In 2001, Mr. Bryan admitted to Memorial Hermann Hospital officials in
Houston that he missed a work shift because he was an alcoholic and had
relapsed.

In 1999, he pleaded no contest to public intoxication.

In 1996, he was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. Mr. Bryan
paid a fine and was placed on probation for a year.

In 1988, he was arrested for public intoxication and paid a fine. A year
earlier, he was arrested for theft twice and paid fines and was placed on
probation after pleading no contest.
