SLOWING A SCOURGE

Alabamians with stuffy noses found it harder to buy decongestants
ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. The tablets are a key ingredient in
the illegal drug methamphetamine, considered the No. 1 drug problem
in Alabama.

The Legislature on the last day of this year's session passed a law
requiring tablets in which ephedrine or pseudoephedrine is the sole
active ingredient to be kept behind the counter or in a locked
display case stores across Alabama.

Similar legislation has had a positive, dramatic impact on the meth
scourge in other states, such as Oklahoma. Let's hope it works in
Alabama, as well.
