KAUKAUNA SCHOOL BOARD OKS DRUG PREVENTION MEASURES

KAUKAUNA -- The school district will push forward with two
initiatives aimed to strengthen its drug prevention program.

By a 6-1 vote Monday, the Board of Education approved the creation of
a policy allowing canine units to perform drug searches at Kaukauna
High School and River View Middle School. And by a 5-2 vote, the
board voted in favor of a concept for random drug testing at the high school.

"The idea behind this is not as a punishment. It's to provide help to
students and move the district forward so it can claim to be an
alcohol- and drug-free and safe district," said Randy Hughes, special
education and pupil services director.

The move lets Hughes put together a task force to formulate a drug
dog policy for use by January 2006. A random drug testing program
would not be available before September 2006.

Board member Sue Vande Yacht, who voted against random drug testing
last week before the motion was vacated due to open meetings
concerns, sided in its favor.

"It's just a concept," she said, noting she was uncomfortable that
random drug testing does not include the participation of the entire
student body.

Random testing involves students who sign drug-free pledge cards,
those who participate in extra-curricular activities or use the
student parking lot.
