A 'GREEN' SOLUTION TO THE WAR ON DRUGS

Re: Elizabeth May On Abortion, Colby Cosh, Dec. 15.

In discussing the Green party's position on abortion, Colby Cosh
wonders why the logic of legalizing abortion to reduce harm doesn't
apply to the War on Drugs.

Actually, it does. That's exactly why the Green position has always
been that we should legalize drugs and treat them as a social and
health problem rather than fight a costly, pointless and doomed
"war." Reducing smoking and alcohol abuse has been far more
successful through regulation, tax and treatment than ever under prohibition.

And I agree there is nothing in Christianity that supports fighting
drugs through criminalization. Christ would show compassion to the
fallen and help them back on their way.

In this, we are in accord with most progressives nations, as well as
the Fraser Institute, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police,
countless health professionals and every multi-party committee from
our House and Senate.

The Green party would win the war on drugs by ending it. I'm glad
Mr. Cosh supports our position.

Erich Jacoby-Hawkins, candidate for the Green Party of Canada, Barrie, Ont.
