ARMED MEN WEREN'T ARMY, MEXICO SAYS

At least 10 heavily armed men in Mexican military-style uniforms who
confronted Texas law officers with guns drawn Monday east of El Paso
were drug smugglers, not soldiers, Mexican and U.S. officials said
Wednesday. "These were not Mexican army soldiers," Mexican
presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said. He said both countries were
investigating the incident, in which no shots were fired.

A U.S. law enforcement official who spoke anonymously because the
issue is sensitive told the Associated Press the FBI found no evidence
the men were soldiers.
