MEDICINAL MARIJUANA ACTIVIST IN U.S. JAIL AFTER DEPORTATION FROM CANADA

VANCOUVER - An American medicinal marijuana activist who lost a bid
to stay in Canada as a refugee last week is in solitary confinement
in a San Francisco jail, his lawyer says. Steve Kubby has pleaded not
guilty to violating his probation in connection with drug charges.

Lawyer Bill McPike said Wednesday Kubby has been placed in solitary
while awaiting his next hearing and has lost a lot of weight. Kubby
has a rare adrenal cancer and says he uses marijuana to alleviate the symptoms.

Kubby left Vancouver last Thursday in compliance with a deportation
order after exhausting attempts to claim refugee status in Canada.
