COCAINE DEALER JAILED TO DETER OTHER TRAFFICKERS
Getting caught with cocaine and marijuana for the purpose of
trafficking, while on bail awaiting trial for selling ecstasy to an
undercover police officer, has landed a Didsbury man in prison.
Provincial court Judge Bruce Fraser said in recently sentencing Brian
Robert Young, 28, to a term of 21/2 years that a message had to be
sent to such offenders.
"Selling such an insidious drug as cocaine to the public and getting
them addicted or feeding their habit makes a trafficker of cocaine a
danger to the community," said Fraser.
"Addicts must obtain the money to feed their addiction. They often
stop being contributing members of society and lose their income.
They often turn to lives of crime, committing thefts, break-ins and
even robberies. In my view, traffickers are dangers to the community . . . ."
Fraser said Young was arrested during a routine traffic stop on June
24, 2004, with four bags of marijuana totalling 112 grams and 17 bags
of cocaine totalling 28 grams.
"The amount is substantial and puts it in the range of a commercial
enterprise," said the judge, noting the street value was worth up to $3,000.
Young had previously sold two tablets of ecstasy, an amphetamine, to
an undercover police officer on Jan. 12, 2003. He pleaded guilty to
that charge on Dec. 21, 2004, and was given a 12-month conditional
jail sentence to be served in the community.
He breached a condition of the conditional sentence by being in
possession of a cellphone last Sept. 22 and had seven months added
onto his conditional sentence.
