SHARE'S FREE SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM
Share Alcohol and Drug Program hosting a free education series and
people can attend all or some of the sessions.
The program is open to everyone in the Tri-Cities. It has important
information for those who have an alcohol or drug problem, or for
those concerned about their use. It will help those people affected
by others' use to understand addicts and addictive behaviour.
The format consists of a video, a brief presentation and open
discussion, and sessions run Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Share,
second floor, 2615 Clarke St., Port Moody. Topics are as follows:
* June 7: Use, abuse, dependency -- how people become addicted.
* June 14: Medical aspects and effects of alcohol and drug misuse.
What happens to the body and mind under the influence.
* June 21: Relapse prevention -- discussion on the psychological,
emotional and physical aspects of relapsing and a beginning look at
what can be done.
* June 28: Cocaine and crystal meth -- the struggle to recover, the
long-term recovery from our ever-growing problem.
* July 5: Stage 2 recovery or learning how to love and enjoy life
clean and sober.
* July 12: Stress -- learning to cope with life's little and big problems.
* July 19: Anger -- understanding your anger and learning how to
manage it more effectively.
* July 26: Trauma -- How substance misuse often occurs with people
who have experienced childhood sexual or physical abuse. How these
experiences may cause relapses or continued misuse.
* Aug. 2: Substance affected/adult children of alcoholics or how
others' misuse affects us.
