3 HEROIN OVERDOSE VICTIMS REVIVED

Three people now face criminal charges after overdosing on heroin
this weekend in the city of Wilmington.

The incidents all occurred within 12 hours of each other Saturday
afternoon into early Sunday morning, police spokesman Master Sgt.
James Gestwicki said.

All three victims were found unconscious and revived by paramedics.

Gestwicki said the first incident occurred at 1 p.m. when police and
paramedics were called to the 1000 block of West Fourth Street for a
41-year-old unconscious woman suffering from an apparent overdose.

She was taken to St. Francis Hospital where she was admitted for
treatment of a heroin overdose. The woman told police the heroin she
had purchased was stamped "Batman," Gestwicki said.

Three hours later, officers and paramedics were sent to a rear yard
in the 300 block of N. Broom St. where they found an unconscious
32-year-old man on the ground. He, too, was taken to St. Francis
Hospital where he was also admitted for a heroin overdose, Gestwicki said.

No information was available on what stamp was on the package of
heroin he ingested.

At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a third victim was found unconscious on the
sidewalk at Eighth and Pine streets. In that case, an empty heroin
bag stamped "Ice Cream" was found near where he collapsed.

"We assume from the evidence that it's heroin they overdosed on, but
we don't know if it's the tainted heroin," Gestwicki said. "We have
to get that determination from the state Medical Examiner's office."
