NEW LAW TARGETS METHAMPHETAMINE PRODUCTION
In a bid to curb methamphetamine manufacturing, a new federal law
taking affect today requires pharmacists to place cold medications
containing pseudoephedrine behind the counter and to limit the amount
a person can buy.
Pseudoephedrine is one of the key ingredients in methamphetamine.
The law, authored by Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Jim
Talent, R-Mo, also requires those purchasing cold medications
containing pseudoephedrine to sign for the drugs and provide identification.
As of today, a person can buy up 3.6 grams, or about 120 pills, per
day, and no more than more than about 300 pills, per month.
The law also provides $585 million for enforcement, education and
treatment programs.
