District Plans Program, Poster Contest As Part Of National Awareness Week

RANDOLPH -- The township school district will celebrate Red Ribbon
Week Oct. 23-27 in order to show unity for a drug-free America.

"Red Ribbon Week offers us the opportunity to be proactive in
teaching kids the skills needed for wise decision-making in
addressing tobacco, alcohol and drug-related decisions,"Diane
Auerbach, Randolph Middle School's student assistance counselor, said
in an e-mail.

The event kicks off Oct. 23 with Red Ribbon Posters displayed in the
front hallways of the school buildings.

Center Grove have a scheduled visit from a Drug Enforcement
Administration officer --who's expected to fly in via helicopter and
speak to students.

The middle school will have programs geared more toward them and their parents.

Eighth-graders will attend a program on Oct. 24 called "Our Hopes and
Dreams: A Story of Truth and Sadness."

And there will be a Oct. 24 parent program at the middle school at 7 p.m.

Sixth- and seventh-graders will hear anti-tobacco and alcohol
programs on Oct. 26.

There also will be a poster contest for middle school students. Grade
six's theme is "be smoke free."

Grade seven's theme is "be alcohol free." And Grade eight's theme is
"be drug free."

The paper size must be 12 by 18 inches only. Smaller or larger ones
will not be considered.

Students should stick to grade themes and have their team, homeroom
teacher and name on the back of the poster. They're due at school by Oct. 18.

Prizes will be awarded based on creativity and appropriateness.
