HELLS ANGELS' COCAINE TRIAL PUT ON HOLD
Three Hells Angels have had their cocaine-trafficking trial adjourned
indefinitely, pending the outcome of an abuse-of-process application
involving another Angels trial.
The trial of the three men-- members of the Vancouver East End
chapter of the motorcycle club who allegedly committed their offences
in Kelowna -- was to begin Jan. 9. On Friday, federal prosecutors
told B.C. Supreme Court Madam Justice Anne Mackenzie that an abuse
application involving two other Angels had to be ruled on first.
Doug Jevning, a lawyer for one of the men, warned the judge that
further delays in the trial, which has already been adjourned once,
would require further adjournments of his other cases and jeopardize
his finances.
The judge said she appreciated the close connection between the
Kelowna case and the abuse application, and agreed that the trial
needed to be delayed. But she agreed to vary the bail of one of the
men so that he can take a honeymoon trip to Mexico in December.
The abuse application, in which two Angels are alleging a police
agent committed unauthorized crimes is set to resume tomorrow for
another eight days of evidence. The pair are seeking to have their
drug-trafficking charges stayed.
