NEW APPROACH NEEDED, NOT MORE JAILS
Re: "B.C. needs to build more jails," Dec. 31.
Again this government appears to be following the discredited American
model of jailing anyone who doesn't fit in.
Half the inmates in the American profit-making jail system are in
prison as a result of the failed war on drugs.
Solicitor General John Les is proposing to expand the jail system here
even while admitting that many in jail should be out on bail.
Another large proportion of the prison population should really be in
rehab or psychiatric care.
