FATHER SAYS DRUG ADDICTED SON COULDN'T 'DO ANYTHING ABOUT' IT

The man fatally stabbed last week on a street known for drug
trafficking was an addict who couldn't shake the habit, his father
said Monday.

Kelly Clarke Gaudek, 38, was attacked and stabbed once in the chest
last Thursday at 8th Avenue and 4th Street S.E. -- an area known as
crack cul-de-sac.

He stumbled to the City Hall LRT station and was rushed to hospital by
paramedics, but was pronounced dead a short while later.

"He was a drug addict and he couldn't get off it," Frank Gaudek said
Monday.

"It's one of those things that can't be explained. There are things
you can do something about and things you can't do anything about."

The investigation into the homicide got off to a false start after
several witnesses thought to have seen the stabbing actually saw
another nearby assault that occurred around the same time.

The fatal attack took place in a high traffic area early in the
evening. Police say it appears Gaudek was cornered by several people
before he was stabbed.

Police believe the attack was witnessed and the offenders are known,
said Det. John Dooks of the Calgary police homicide unit.

"We need more people who saw the (fatal) attack to come forward to
assist us with the investigation and hopefully identify the
offenders," he said.

Gaudek was known to police.

"It's the 25th murder in Calgary for the year. We think that even the
homeless and the people in the area would be offended by something
like that," Dooks said.
