TOXIC CHEMICALS: SOIL TESTING STARTS IN SURREY

Soil testing is expected to begin tomorrow at two sites in Surrey
where officials discovered toxic chemicals used in drug production.

The chemicals -- dumped in barrels, buckets and bags -- were found
Tuesday morning, prompting police and emergency-services personnel to
warn of the potential for a mass evacuation. The evacuation warning
was later lifted when it was determined the chemicals were stable.

Surrey Fire Service Deputy Chief Jon Caviligia said the chemicals
were safely removed from the sites at 182nd and 70th and the
7300-block 194th Street Friday. The recovered materials will most
likely be shipped to Alberta for disposal.

A construction worker who complained of numbness in his face after he
inadvertently tipped over some of the containers at the site is in
good condition, Caviligia said. Hazardous materials personnel also
witnessed a gaseous plume at the site.

Police have yet to track down the drug lab.
