HEROIN ADDICT SUSPENDED FROM TEACHING

A heroin and cocaine addict who was convicted of robbery in 2003 has
lost the right to teach, at least temporarily.

The B.C. College of Teachers says it suspended the woman's teaching
certificate last month because her criminal behaviour and her drug
addictions constitute "conduct unbecoming" a teacher. Her licence will
be suspended until she meets certain conditions, the college says in a
posting on its website, but it does not elaborate.

The college says it is withholding the teacher's name due to her
personal and medical situation.

The decision was made in camera by a college committee and accepted by
the teacher. In such cases, the college routinely refuses to provide
any information to the public beyond a brief summary posted on the
website. It does not disclose where disciplined teachers were employed.
