TOOLS FOR FIGHTING GROW OPS REST WITH PROVINCE, COUNCIL DECIDES

Calgary will ask the province to toughen legislation on marijuana
grow ops instead of bringing in local bylaws that can't be enforced.

The city's community and protective services committee received a
report this week outlining a legal review of bylaws used in other
jurisdictions to curtail the number of grow ops.

It stated some of the rules used in British Columbia, for example,
can't be applied in Calgary because the city isn't allowed to
regulate matters covered by provincial fire and building codes.

Bylaw boss Bill Bruce said they will continue to work with the
province to address the outstanding issues.

While Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart said she was disappointed the city
can't do more to combat grow ops, she agreed there was no point in
coming up with bylaws that would be struck down.
