OFFICER-SHOOTING SUSPECT'S SURRENDER AIDED

Lawyer Helped Teen Negotiate Time, Place

TAMPA - A lawyer helped negotiate the surrender of the 18-year-old
man accused of shooting a detective during an undercover drug
operation Sunday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Detective Christopher Baumann remained in critical but stable
condition Sunday afternoon at Tampa General Hospital, sheriff's
spokesman J.D. Callaway said. Baumann, 28, underwent surgery after
being shot once in the abdomen, he said.

DeAndre Jamal Wallace, of 4908 S. 80th St., is charged with two
counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, Callaway said.

Jail records show Wallace faces several other charges: carrying a
concealed firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon,
battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence
and improper exhibition of a firearm.

Wallace, who was shot once in the upper right chest, was released
from the hospital Sunday afternoon to the infirmary of Falkenburg Road Jail.

He is being held without bail, records show.

Wallace was arrested after a six-hour manhunt conducted by about 100
deputies as well as officers from Tampa police, Florida Highway
Patrol, and the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Callaway said a couple of hours were spent talking through Wallace's
attorney to negotiate a time and place for the surrender. He did not
have the identity of the attorney Sunday.

About 9:20 p.m., Callaway said, relatives drove Wallace to a
McDonald's parking lot at Interstate 4 and 22nd Street in Ybor City.

Wallace was taken into custody and to a hospital, he said.

The shooting occurred about 3:40 p.m. during an undercover drug
operation at 5206 S. 82nd St. in Progress Village.

Three undercover detectives had completed a deal for about three
rocks of crack cocaine with a drug dealer when Wallace came over and
displayed a pistol, Callaway said. "We don't know why he walked up to
the car and showed the pistol," he said.

The undercover detectives drove away and backup detectives were told
about the armed man, Callaway said.

Upon arriving, Baumann and Detective Tracey Balogh, 34, ordered those
outside the residence to get on the ground, Callaway said.

Baumann wore a sheriff's office raid jacket but not a
bullet-resistant vest, Callaway said.

Baumann chased the drug dealer to the back of the house but lost
sight of him, Callaway said. Investigators are still working to
identify the drug dealer who fled the scene, he said.

Baumann returned to the front yard where Wallace might have been
using nearby parked vehicles as cover, Callaway said.

"Wallace just appeared," Callaway said. "We don't know if he was
crouched down."

Callaway said a "very quick arms-length tussle" took place between
the two detectives and Wallace.

Wallace fired at least four times with a .25-caliber handgun,
Callaway said. Balogh shot back at least three times with a 9mm
handgun and hit Wallace, Callaway said.

Wallace ran and dumped his gun in a nearby backyard, Callaway said.
