PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD CONSIDERS FATE OF TEACHER
Behind closed doors on Tuesday night, the Regina Public School Board
debated the fate of a suspended elementary school teacher, who had
drug-related charges against him stayed earlier this week.
Stanley Tom Mamela, 39, was facing charges of possession of cocaine
for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of
crime. He was supposed to go on trial on Tuesday, but his charges were
stayed by the federal Crown.
At the time of his arrest, Mamela had been teaching at Coronation Park
School. The charges date back to Aug. 15 on or near Regina.
A short time after his arrest, the board decided to suspend Mamela
without pay.
On Tuesday night, Mamela's future with the school division was
discussed by the board. But if a decision was made about Mamela's
future, it will not be made public until the meeting's minutes are
released shortly before the next board meeting, scheduled for June
19.
A stay of proceedings means the charges have basically been dropped
although they may be reactivated anytime within a one-year period from
the time the stay was entered into the record.
In March, co-accused Brady Hashem, 18, was committed to stand trial at
Court of Queen's Bench following his preliminary hearing.
