MAN'S ARREST CONNECTED TO MASSIVE DRUG SEIZURE

REGINA -- The RCMP arrested a suspect on Wednesday in connection with
one of the largest drug seizures in Saskatchewan history.

At about 2:15 p.m., a Moose Jaw RCMP traf-fic services unit pulled
over an eastbound GMC motorhome just west of Caronport on the Trans-
Canada Highway for an alleged traffic offence.

While police were investigating, they found evidence that led to a
narcotics investigation. During the investigation -- which also
involved the Regina integrated drug unit and the integrated proceeds
of crime unit -- a police dog was able to confirm the vehicle
contained narcotics.

A subsequent search revealed 45 kilograms of cocaine and 120 kilograms
of marijuana concealed within the motorhome's interior, including
within the furniture of the living compartment.

The RCMP estimates a recreational user of cocaine could use between
one half to one full gram of the drug per week, with a heavy user
taking up to three grams per day. Police also estimate amount of
marijuana seized could produce between 350,000 and 600,000 cigarettes,
with a heavy user consuming about one gram per day.

"The cocaine aspect of things is definitely one the larger seizures
that we've seen in the province," said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Brad
Kaeding. " do see quantities as big or bigger than this in terms of
marijuana, but 45,000 grams of cocaine is defi-nitely a significant
quantity." The RCMP has not released a street value of drugs, but
based on past estimates, it is likely to in the millions of dollars.

The driver and lone occupant of the motorhome was arrested at the
scene. A 41-year-old man from Vancouver is now facing two charges of
possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking. He made his
first appearance in Moose Jaw provincial court on Thursday and was
remanded until Monday.
