HYDRO ZAPS GROW-OPS
LANGLEY - B.C. Hydro has helped the RCMP find 40 grow-ops in Langley.
Hydro identified 46 properties with abnormally high electricity
usage. When inspected, 40 of those had recent or active marijuana
grow-operations, says township fire chief Doug Wade.
Electricity was cut off to 25 properties to reduce fire risk. The
township has issued $148,000 in inspection fees against the property
owners, who have also paid thousands of dollars in repairs and
building permits.
Hydro created a database of 2,599 properties that were using three
times the normal amount of electricity. Of those, 414 were taken off
the list because they were legitimate operations, 99 remain on a
watch list and 1,900 still need to be looked at.
