BOTCHED RAID ON MAYOR'S HOUSE LEAVES DOGS DEAD
A U.S. mayor has demanded a federal probe into a police raid on his
house last month by zealous county cops who sought to foil a drug
trafficking ring and ended up killing his two dogs.
The bizarre turn of events began on July 29 as Cheye Calvo, the mayor
of Berwyn Heights, Md., a suburb of Washington, returned home from
work at the end of the day.
Calvo picked up the day's mail, including a package addressed to his
wife, and brought it inside.
Prince George's County police then burst into the house, shot his two
Labradors and handcuffed the underwear-clad mayor and his
mother-in-law, who was also at home at the time.
Unbeknownst to Calvo, the package contained a hefty amount of
marijuana and was dropped off by drug dealers as part of an elaborate
drug scheme county police were trying to bust.
"After about an hour, it dawned on the police these are not drug
dealers," the mayor's attorney Timothy Maloney.
Calvo has demanded a federal probe.
"We've asked the Department of Justice civil rights division to
investigate the incident," Calvo said. "They had a kind of standard
warrant which allowed them to enter peacefully."
The police have not apologized to the mayor for their actions. "Of
course we understand the pain caused by the loss of pets," said
spokeswoman Sharon Taylor
