In response to the story, "Councilman keeps an eye on drug dealers,"
(AC-T, Jan. 7), about Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower
personally taking notes on Asheville public housing drug use: We need
more motivated people like Mumpower in our system.
We need more accountability. The compartmentalized bureaucratic
mentality is one of the contributing factors to a major slip in
control over taxpayer-funded projects like public housing. I am
reminded to maintain confidence that the system has built-in checks
and balances: Mumpower is ringing a bell that should be heard. (Don't
you think he would rather be behind a desk discussing policy? Instead he
obviously feels he has to pick up slack and is taking a personal risk to
raise a red flag in order to protect a vulnerable community here).
