WE OUGHT TO BE THANKING, NOT CONDEMNING, CARL MUMPOWER
Regarding the story, "Councilman keeps an eye on drug dealers," (AC-T,
Jan. 7): Is what I am reading about Asheville City Councilman Carl
Mumpower's personal concern in combating drug crime and asking that
this problem receive more attention from the police department for
real? Insinuating (as Mayor Bellamy appears to have done) that Carl is
"overstepping the boundaries (by his actions) and breaking the law" is
disgraceful. Shame on Mayor Bellamy.
Next we probably will hear those who criticize Mumpower (including
other City Council members) simply say, "Shame on you for caring,
Carl." Why don't we support his concern rather than criticize? A
positive comment from Asheville Police Chief Hogan at least would have
been appropriate, rather than declining to comment when approached by
the AC-T. Makes one wonder if politics had anything to do with the
criticism Mumpower has received. Could it be? Naw . party doesn't make
any difference. As one citizen who appreciates his concern, I thank
Councilman Mumpower for caring.
