DRUGS IN JAIL 'HALF THE PRICE'

A DRUG dealer yesterday claimed he bought heroin inside a prison for
half the price he would have paid for it on the street.

Andrew Crawley was caught dealing after warders became suspicious of
the large queue of inmates trailing in and out of his cell.

He told a court he picked up cash to buy heroin on a home visit to
Liverpool.

But instead of paying UKP500 to a street dealer, he went back to Castle
Huntly prison, near Dundee, to buy it for UKP250.

Perth Sheriff Court was told prison officers found heroin in his
pocket.

Crawley, 29, now of Perth Prison, admitted being concerned in the
supply of heroin at the jail last September.

His lawyer said he had not been able to see his son during his leave
and he had sunk into depression.

Sheriff William Gallagher added 14 months to the four years Crawley
was serving for a drugs offence. If he had kept out of trouble, he
could have been out on parole in May.
