TALENT NO EXCUSE FOR DRUG USE
Re: Readers Defend Barenaked Lady, letters to the editor, July 22.
I will admit to being a little shocked at the reaction to the Steven
Page cocaine story in your letters section. Not shocked that people
would defend Mr. Page, mind you-- people seem all too willing to
forgive celebrities who break the law. No, what shocked me was the
arguments that were used, specifically that of letter-writer Carolyn
Brown. Just because Mr. Page is talented and accomplished doesn't give
him a free pass. If nothing else, his celebrity is the reason why this
case should be publicized -- to show people exactly how devastating
drug use can be, and to remind all that it affects more than just the
accused.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Page fell into cocaine use, but it was his
actions which placed him in this situation, not those of anyone else.
My guess is that when the mug shots of common criminals appear on the
front page of the Post, Ms. Brown has no problem with the publicity
and unwanted attention foisted upon their children and families. At
least, not enough to write an outraged letter to the editor.
