COPS: HE DIDN'T HELP HIS FRIEND
HOBOKEN - Police have charged a former Bayonne man with failing to
get help for a woman who apparently died of a drug overdose after
using heroin and possibly other drugs with him the previous night,
officials said yesterday.
Newark resident George V. Schultz, 44, who lived on North Street in
Bayonne earlier this year, was charged Monday with recklessly
endangering an injured victim by failing to get help in a timely
manner, tampering with evidence and drug possession, Hudson County
Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.
"At this point he will not be charged with her death but the
investigation continues," DeFazio said.
Emily Kaufman, 41, was found dead at 10:04 a.m. last Saturday in her
home on Garden Street near Second Street, DeFazio said. An autopsy
did not determine the cause of her death and further medical testing,
including toxicology tests, must be done, DeFazio said, adding that
her death is consistent with an overdose.
The prosecutor said it appears Kaufman became ill after doing drugs
with Schultz on Friday evening, July 11, but Schultz did not seek
help for her. Kaufman went to bed that night and it was only when she
did not wake in the morning that he called someone, who told Schultz
to call police, DeFazio said.
By the time Schultz dialed 911 at 9:37 a.m. on July 12, it was too
late, DeFazio said.
Schultz was charged with tampering with evidence because
investigators believe he disposed of drugs that were at scene,
DeFazio said.
