PRO-DRUG MESSAGE NOT FOR FAMILY PARADE
The Editor:
As with many Abbotsford residents I spent my Canada Day holiday with
friends and family enjoying the Abbotsford parade.
I wave at the politicians, applaud the Shriners and cheer for the
children.
It is quirky, and at times hokey, but it's a family tradition and I am
there every July 1, rain or shine.
However, this year I was appalled and dismayed that Tim Felger and
this ilk were allowed to participate in the parade.
At heart I am a libertarian and understand the importance of free
speech but imploring children to "bring home a $20 bag" crosses even
the most tolerant bounds of decency.
My indignation has little to do with whether marijuana should or
should not be legalized; if, at a family-oriented parade a person
carried a sign that read "mom called and she wants some liquor" or
"dad wants you to pick up some porn," I would likewise be outraged.
As it was, the pro-drug message was wholly inappropriate at a
city-sanctioned event but even more so because it was directed at children.
The Abbotsford Canada Day parade is a family event and should not be
used as a forum to make overt political statements.
I hope that this will not tarnish the parade again next
year.
