LET HIGH COURT DECIDE
The lawyer representing Vancouver's safe-injection site says Insite's
fate will likely end up being decided by the country's highest court.
Ottawa has filed an appeal in the B.C. Court of Appeal of a May 27
ruling by Justice Ian Pitfield that found certain sections of the
federal government's drug laws to be unconstitutional.
He gave the government a year to rewrite them, effectively ensuring
Insite remained open as a health-care service.
"Regardless of what happens at the Court of Appeal, it may go up to
the Supreme Court of Canada," said Insite lawyer Monique
Pongracic-Speier. She said the facility will continue to operate for
the time being.
