COURT RULINGS GIVE KIDS THE WRONG LESSONS
Re: Court rulings allow for protection of students and their Charter
rights, May 7
If those rulings are correct, by logical extension the police might
have to return the illegal drugs to the student because they searched
for it and seized it unlawfully.
But what if the correct interpretation is the police and dogs did
their job in an orderly fashion, successfully discovered street drugs
and a young lawbreaker? Crime solved, a sobering life lesson for the student.
It's not like they Tasered the kid. In my book if you're caught
red-handed breaking the law, your Charter right to privacy becomes
academic at best.
The only thing kids learn from this is lawyers can help you weasel
out of just about anything. The courts have struck a blow against
nipping the evils of drugs at a crucial crossroads in young people's lives.
Imagine if students knew police dogs could pass through during a
school day in an effort to protect our children and our community,
and perform their function in what is after all a public facility.
Our schools would be drug-free in a heartbeat.
