NO PROFIT IN ADDICTION
Robert Kennedy said: "Tragedy was a lesson to the living to gain
wisdom." There is an immense tragedy affecting our community -- the
subculture of drugs, which is bent upon the destruction of lives, at
the cost of our neighbourhoods.
Violent crimes have increased in Windsor in proportion to the need of
those addicted to the substance of choice, primarily crack cocaine.
This epidemic threatens the safety of all in our community and no one
is immune to having a crack house move in on their block.
Equally upsetting is the large number of variety stores selling crack
stems and pipes to those caught in this deadly addiction.
I believe that this sort of profiteering is without values and
extremely disrespectful to the neighbourhoods in which they do business.
This drug paraphernalia can only be used for one thing. But it also
threatens our children with desensitizing displays, which are often in
plain view. Our laws should prevent such displays.
I hope to meet with city council to propose a bylaw that would prevent
the display and promotion of these items.
I hope that you will call your city councillors to voice your
support.
As a citizen of Windsor, if you see large volumes of people and car
traffic going to and from local homes, please call the Windsor Police
Drug Squad to report your suspicions anonymously.
Crack cocaine is extremely addictive and the costs to communities are
huge; theft, the spread of disease, murders, suicides and death due to
overdose are just some of the results of allowing this activity to
continue.
Let us gain wisdom and seek solutions in the light of this
tragedy.
