PRIVACY TAKES SUPREMACY
Re: "Sniffer dogs a welcome sight for this reader," Letter, April 28.
I disagree most strongly with Sudhir Jain. He criticizes the Supreme
Court of Canada's decision upholding individual rights and freedoms
by finding that police cannot violate principles by using sniffer
dogs in a hunting-for-suspects role. In our freedom-loving country,
we are protected from a police state. Our individual freedoms
prohibit the police from stopping and searching anyone without proper
reason to do so. Jain should realize these protections are in place
to safeguard all unreasonable searches, including stopping and
searching someone for terrorist activities just because he wears a
turban and a beard.
