YHS CONSIDERS DRUG TESTING

YREKA - With more than 25 student expulsions district-wide, Yreka
High School is looking at one possible solution to the problem: A
student drug testing policy.

YHS Superintendent Mark Greenfield said 'something has to be done to
deter the (drug) problem.'

Greenfield said the students expelled were using marijuana,
prescription medication or a combination of both. After seeing a high
number of student expulsions, he said drug testing 'became an option.'

'This is one way, yes. But, we're not jumping into it right away,'
Greenfield said.

Chris Harris, YHS assistant principal, said a preliminary student drug
testing policy was drawn up. 'It was given to students involved in
athletics. Parents read the policy and some have responded.'

Harris said he has heard 'both good and bad things' about the policy.

He gave the caveat that the initial draft 'was not set in stone.'
