CRACK, VIAGRA ON DND DRUG SEIZURE LIST
Military police made almost 300 drug seizures on Canadian Forces
bases in the past two years -- from marijuana, magic mushrooms and
hash oil to ecstasy pills and crack cocaine.
Records obtained by Sun Media through Access to Information show some
prescription drugs were also confiscated on DND property, including
Viagra, Clonazepam (prescribed for anxiety and panic disorder,
restless leg syndrome or epilepsy) and steroids, as well as
paraphernalia such as meth pipes, syringes, seeds and drug test kits.
Jonathan Juteau, a spokesman for the Department of National Defence,
said the Canadian Forces have a zero-tolerance policy and a
comprehensive drug control program designed to preserve "operational
readiness" and the safety of members.
Prescription drugs are also tightly controlled, authorized only by a
medical or dental practitioner.
All personnel set for deployment to Afghanistan must undergo drug
testing, with a positive result requiring an administrative review.
That process could lead to the soldier being pulled from a
safety-sensitive position, mandatory counselling and probation or in
some cases a compulsory release from duty and charges.
Since testing began, the percentage of soldiers who have tested
positive for illicit drugs has dropped to 1.8% from 4.3%.
