PROTECTING CHILDREN TRUMPS PRISON PRIVACY RIGHT

Is Craig Jones of the John Howard Society serious when he suggests
inmates have privacy
rights when it comes to trafficking drugs in prison?

Any parent who uses a child or infant to smuggle illegal drugs into a
federal institution should certainly be reported to the Ministry of
Children and Families. The police should be called, too.

I commend Matsqui correctional officer Terry Leger for having the
moral integrity to contact the ministry to take action to protect
innocent children, when his employer apparently will not.

Any child exposed to drugs like cocaine or meth is at risk of serious
harm. The legal obligation to report suspected child abuse supersedes
the privacy rights of even a therapist-client relationship.

The Correctional Service of Canada is not exempt from this legal and
moral requirement just because inmates have privacy rights.
