SEED SELLER AND SENATOR STIR THE POT IN THE DEBATE ABOUT ILLEGAL DRUGS
Marc Emery is not a martyr. His case is not about protecting our
independence and it is not a travesty of justice. What Emery has done
is to make a very good living and a deliberate political statement. He
knows it is illegal to mail or otherwise transport cannabis seeds to
customers in the U.S. He has willfully ignored that prohibition and is
thus subject to prosecution in the U.S. for violation of U.S. law. The
U.S. is not prosecuting him for selling cannabis products to Canadians
in Canada. Instead of taking concrete steps to try to prevent or at
least discourage American customers, he solicited them.
Just like Canadians would ask the U.S. to extradite an American who
knowingly sold prohibited armaments like certain handguns to Canadians
in Canada, even if they aren't banned in the U.S., the Americans can
expect us to deliver Emery. Whatever your position on the legalization
of cannabis, we cannot protect someone who courts martyrdom by
flouting the laws of another country.
