GRANT TO COUNTER TEENAGE DRUG ABUSE
In its fourth round of grant-making for 1998, the Peninsula Community
Foundation has given $20,950 to El Centro de Libertad in Redwood City for
its programs that target teens with substance abuse problems in San Mateo
County. Officials say use of drugs by teens in the county has increased 20
percent in the past year.
Recognized for its effective rehabilitation program, El Centro de Libertad
is often where courts and drug-treatment agencies send clients who have
relapsed after participating in other programs. It's one of the few drug
treatment agencies in San Mateo County able to serve Spanish-speaking
clients, said Patricia Bresee, a member of the foundation's distribution
committee.
